Things to do in Portumna for older people

The town is located on the northern shores of Lough Derg - the largest lake on the river Shannon. Fishing is a major sport for locals and tourists. For more information on fishing in the Shannon region see the website of the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board.

Sailing and pleasure boat cruising are also very popular and easily accessible as there are a number of businesses hiring out boats in the area. e.g.  Emerald Star Cruisers

 

If you are interested in sport, Portumna is the home of Portumna GAA, recent winners of the AIB All Ireland Hurling Club Championship. If you wish to keep fit you may like to join Portumna Golf Club or just want to have a leisurely stroll there are a number of walks in the area. Portumna Forest Park covers almost 450 hectares,  Rinmaher Walk  and Bonaveen Walking Trail are two examples of the forest trails in this public park.

In the grounds of the forest park, Portumna Castle and gardens will provide hours of pleasure. The castle, on which considerable restoration work has been carried out by the Office of Public Works, dates back to the 17th century and was the seat of the Earl of Clanrickarde. There is an old Abbey within the Park which dates back to the 15th century. Other historical sites in the town include a number of Churches and Portumna Workhouse and Portumna Bridge.
